Rashie vs Wetsuit vs Technical Waterwear: The Product Comparison Centre

A rashie, a wetsuit and a Technical Waterwear layer are not competing answers to the same question. They are different answers to different questions. Before the comparison, the one idea that makes all of it make sense. A rashie was built for sun and abrasion. A wetsuit was built for cold water immersion. The numbers are guides, not rules. Your own cold tolerance, the length of the session and the wind all move the boundaries, which is exactly why a decision framework beats a fixed chart.

Step one, start with water temperature

Water temperature sets the immersion insulation, the floor everything else builds on. As a broad guide, and our wetsuit thickness guide covers it in detail, water of 24 C and above needs little more than sun and abrasion protection, so a Rapid Dry layer or a rashie is enough. From 18 to 24 C a Chillproof or T2 garment on its own often replaces a thin wetsuit entirely, with no buoyancy and no lead. From 14 to 18 C the usual answer is a 3 mm wetsuit, or a 3 mm wetsuit with a Chillproof or T2 layer for more warmth without more buoyancy. Below 14 C the immersion layer steps up to 5 mm and then 7 mm or a semi dry, with a thermal layer underneath for warmth and a Neptune wetsuit for sustained cold.

Step two, add the surface environment

This is the step traditional buying ignores, and the one that changes the answer most. Once the immersion layer is set, ask how much time you spend above the water, how strong the wind is, and how cold the air is. A diver doing two dives spends far longer on the boat than in the water, a paddler is exposed to wind for the entire session, and a swimmer is most vulnerable in the minutes straight after exiting. The wetsuit does nothing useful here, because it is wet by design and windchill strips heat from it fast. The fix is a windproof breathable layer for the surface, a Chillproof or T2 garment worn under a wetsuit or pulled on the moment you exit. This is why the same water temperature can call for a different setup depending entirely on what happens above the surface.

Step three, match the activity intensity

The last step is effort. Low output activities like recreational diving and snorkelling lose little heat to exertion, so they favour more insulation. High output activities like paddling, surfing and ocean swimming generate heat during effort and lose it fast at rest, so they favour breathability and the ability to layer up and down. A garment that breathes during effort and blocks wind at rest, rather than one fixed level of insulation, is what keeps you in the thermal balance zone across a session that swings between hard work and waiting.

Divers should set the immersion layer by water temperature, then manage the surface interval with a Chillproof or T2 layer, which usually means a thinner wetsuit, less lead and a better day, the Buoyancy Paradox solved in practice. Snorkellers in warm water are well served by Rapid Dry or a thin Chillproof for sun, warmth and a long comfortable session. Surfers and paddlers should prioritise breathability and freedom of movement, a Chillproof or Thermal Flex core with a windproof shell against the wind at rest. Ocean swimmers benefit most from a fast drying UPF 50+ base layer in the water and a Chillproof jacket waiting for the exit, the most vulnerable moment of the session. Sailors face wind as the primary challenge across a long watch, so a windproof breathable layer matters more than immersion insulation.

What to actually buy first

If you own a wetsuit and feel cold above the water, do not buy a thicker wetsuit. Add a Chillproof or T2 layer and you fix the surface problem, cut buoyancy and lead, and often improve immersion warmth at the same time. If you are starting from scratch in temperate water, a Chillproof or T2 garment plus a thin wetsuit covers more conditions than a single thick suit ever will.
