Sun Protection and UPF on the Water

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, and the water amplifies the exposure that causes it. This chapter explains why sun on the water is more dangerous than sun on land, what UPF actually measures and how it differs from the SPF on your sunscreen, and why an ordinary rashie can lose most of its protection the moment it gets wet. By the end you will know how to stay protected across a full day on the water, not just the first hour.

The sun on the water is different

Aquatic users receive more UV radiation than almost anyone else, for two reasons. First, water and wet surfaces reflect UV back upward, so you are hit from above by direct sunlight and from below by reflection at the same time, and the effective dose is higher than the same hours spent on dry land. Second, aquatic activities happen in the open with no shade, often for hours, frequently in the middle of the day when the UV index peaks.

The cooling effect of wind and water also hides the danger. On land, heat is a warning that prompts people to seek shade. On the water, wind and immersion keep the skin cool, the warning never arrives, and the burn is well advanced before it is felt. UV damage is cumulative across a lifetime, every exposure adds to the total, and in a country with the world's highest skin cancer rate the aquatic environment is one of the highest exposure settings there is.

UPF and SPF are not the same thing

The two ratings are often confused, and the difference matters. SPF, Sun Protection Factor, applies to sunscreen, is based on how long it delays burning, measures protection against UVB only unless labelled broad spectrum, and must be reapplied regularly, especially after immersion or sweating. UPF, Ultraviolet Protection Factor, applies to fabric, measures how much UV the fabric actually allows through to the skin, covers both UVA and UVB, and does not wash off or wear away during a session.

The distinction between the two types of UV matters too. UVB is the shorter wavelength, the primary cause of sunburn. UVA is the longer wavelength, penetrating deeper and driving premature ageing and long term skin damage. A broad spectrum approach covers both, and well made UPF fabric blocks both by physically stopping the radiation before it reaches the skin.

What the UPF numbers mean

UPF describes the fraction of UV that reaches the skin. A UPF 50 fabric allows only one fiftieth, around 2%, to pass through, blocking roughly 98%. The Australian standard groups the ratings as follows.

UPF 50+ is the highest rating, blocking at least 98% of UV. Every Sharkskin garment that covers skin is rated UPF 50+. Protection is only delivered where the fabric covers, so coverage and rating matter together.

Why wet fabric changes everything

This is the point most aquatic users never consider, and it is the one that matters most in the water. Many fabrics lose UV protection when wet. A standard cotton t-shirt might offer a UPF of around 5 dry, roughly 20% of UV passing through, and that can drop to a UPF of about 3 when wet, because water fills the gaps in the weave and the fibres stretch apart, opening paths for UV to reach the skin. The classic image of a cotton t-shirt over swimmers is providing far less protection than people assume, and almost none of it once it is wet.

A fabric that holds its rating wet is therefore essential for aquatic use. The areas people forget

Sun protection fails at the edges, the areas left uncovered because they seem minor. The back of the neck is in near constant exposure when looking down at gear or paddling, and is a common site for serious skin damage. The hands are exposed for the entire time on the water and almost never protected. The face, ears and lips burn fast and are easy to neglect. And the top of the head, particularly for thinning or short hair, takes direct overhead sun for hours. A complete approach covers these with the right garments and accessories rather than leaving them to sunscreen alone, since sunscreen on the hands washes off within minutes of the first immersion.

Timing, and the rest of the defence

UV is most intense in the middle of the day, generally between 10am and 2pm, and on the water in an Australian summer the UV index regularly reaches extreme levels. UV also passes through cloud, so an overcast day is not a day off, and it reflects off the water year round, so winter sun on the water still burns. UPF clothing is the foundation because it does not wash off and does not need reapplying, but it works as part of a system, broad spectrum SPF on the skin that fabric does not cover, sunglasses with full UV protection against glare off the water, and shade during the peak hours where it is available. Clothing first, because it is the only layer that holds its protection all day.

Sun protection is thermoregulation

Sun management is not only a skin safety issue, it is a thermal one. As covered in Thermoregulation, radiation is one of the four mechanisms of heat transfer, and solar load adds heat to the body just as wind removes it. A garment that blocks UV also moderates radiant heat gain, which is why a UPF 50+ base layer can keep you cooler in strong sun than bare skin, and why managing the sun is part of holding thermal balance across a long day, not a separate concern bolted on at the end.

The all-day approach

The goal is simple. Start protected and stay protected from the first hour to the last, through immersion, wind and the full arc of the day. That means UPF 50+ fabric that holds its rating wet, coverage that includes the neck, hands and head, and a layering system that keeps you protected as conditions change. In the country with the world's highest skin cancer rate, in one of its highest exposure environments, sun protection is not an accessory to the day on the water. It is part of the equipment.
